It is a rare book that, once I have finished it, inspires me to engage in research.
Alice I Have Been was impeccably written, and perfectly executed to make me care so much about Alice that I wanted to know more. As much as possible. Surely, as this is a work of historical fiction, there must be something that was missed, something else I could read to keep the magic going...
And Magic is exactly the right word. Alice in Wonderland itself is thick with whimsy and fantasy, and this book, being about Alice Liddell, the muse behind Wonderland, is haunted with the magic of childhood and the awkward insistence of the adult 'real' world in getting in the way of that whimsy. It is a beautiful story, and has the advantage of going beyond most Alice stories into Alice's older years with children of her own.
The beginning reads a bit like Little Women with a bit of Lolita thrown in as the relationship between Alice and Mr Dodgson/Lewis Carroll is explored, and continues from there. We see Alice as a wonderfully wayward child, willful adult, and an old woman who is oh so tired of being Alice in Wonderland. Alice I Have Been is an enthralling, intriguing story full of flawed characters and the many faces of love.
Alice I Have Been will be released 1/12/10. I suggest you drop a preorder in now. It is well worth it.
