It started out as a normal evening- a good one, even. [livejournal.com profile] djkc picked up our shiny new bikes (!) and some shamrock shakes (crack...) and made our way home to let the ferrets out for their evening romp.

Celia, the most hyper of ferret kits, was less than hyper, which set of some alarms.

She was laying flat on the floor and looking rather gloomy. I went to play with her a bit and she went to poop in inappropriate places, as is her wont, so I prepared my usual resigned chastisement. But instead of poop, there was blood. A lot of it. And mucus. [livejournal.com profile] djkc ceased his Skyrim, and called the emergency vet while I cleaned up blood and a few more messes involving more mucus and some vomit, and then we got rolling.

Celia, being a most accommodating ferret, decided to reproduce the bloody mess at the vet's office. She underwent an X-ray, being injected with fluids, and having samples taken from indelicate areas. I wish they didn't make such...adorable faces when angry. It makes it hard to take them seriously sometimes.

Thankfully she does not seem to have swallowed anything inappropriate so no surgery (ferret x-rays are rather neat), and as that was my main fear I was much happier having that result back. Diagnosis is a nasty bacterial infection. She gets antibiotics and some supplements, and has to be separated from the pack for a few weeks. And we have to watch the rest of the kids and make sure no one else comes down with the same symptoms.

Cage has been disinfected. All toys and bedding pulled and replaced with new. And I am exhausted.

Going to let the healthy ferrets out for a run and then head to bed.
