Everything this woman pens is golden, I swear.

First rule of thumb when reading Patricia Briggs- Do not use any of her books as "I will read a few pages and settle down for bed." It never works. You will find yourself thinking 'just a few more pages, maybe a chapter...' a chapter turns into another 60 pages, another 120...and then you can't put the thrice damned thing down because everything is coming to a head, so you might as well finish the bugger, because you know you will just be unable to fall asleep until you know how it ends anyway.

Honestly, I should know better by now.

Silver Borne is the newest installment in the Mercy books, and is a strong addition to the series. Patricia Briggs excels at having all the action I want from a fantasy/urban fantasy, all the while sneaking in the romance I don't like to admit to loving. Relationships never seem forced, character interactions are natural, and if I swoon a little when Adam is...well, Adam, then that is perfect. The fallout from Mercy's encounter with Tim is still apparent, but isn't overdone or otherwise bogging down the story. The real gem in this one is Samuel, who holds one of the two main plot points. I have always adored that character, and in this one he gets more development and some timely resolution.

The plot itself is a nasty mix of Pack politics and Fae nastiness. Everything just...worked perfectly together. And in the end even Mercy gets some resolution, finally, in how she actually feels about her status in the Pack. I think one of the things that pleased me so much about this book is there were conclusions, there were resolutions. I was satisfied at the end. I rarely get that with urban fantasy, as the genre seems very involved with stretching stories and characters out for as long as possible. I will happily read more Mercy books, but it was so damn nice to be able to close a book with such a sound sense of satisfaction.

Highly recommended. If you are unfamiliar with the series, go snag a copy of Moon Called, which is book one. It is my favorite ongoing series.
