I will admit, I almost passed this one by on the account of the title seeming a little to gimmicky for my tastes.

That would have been a terrible decision.

Chris McGrath (Art God Extraordinaire)  did the cover art, which made the decision to give it a try. Again with the cover helping me make a decision. I might have to rethink my current stance on the power of cover art...

Living with Ghosts is a fantastic blend of fantasy and horror. It is not at all gimmicky. It is a wonderfully original world, with an ambiance that seeped out of the book and had me looking over my shoulder. The characters are stunningly well put together and damn interesting. It does that thing some readers dont like, starts out with a few characters in different situations and settings that all eventually wind up in one overreaching plot. But where some feel forced this one flowed smoothly and pulled everyone together in a way that thankfully didnt remind me of some of my old D&D party builds from way back in the day.

Dark and lush, the writing is solid, and reminds me a bit of Sarah Monettes Melusine. Anyone with a sort of soft spot for Felix will be interested in Gracielis, one of the major players in Living With Ghosts. Gah, I wish I could find someone to discuss this one with. You, dear friends, get your asses to the bookstore or online seller of your choice and snag a copy so we can engage in witty and intriguing conversation. Living With Ghosts is damn good, and deserves a few rereads, as I am sure I missed a thing or two as i desperately flung pages aside in an attempt to see how it would all end up.

There is murder, betrayal, plague, dark magics, whores, ghosts, soldiers, and ailing monarchs. What more does a book need?
