recently, I mentioned a glorious Hawkeye/Clint Barton addiction. I also promised pictures from World Fantasy Brighton. These things have much in common.

I was lured overseas by [ profile] suricattus, who is an experienced traveler and April-wrangler and was a beautiful balance to my anxiety around all places and things I do not know. Foreign country? Ranks real damn high on causing anxiety in the realm of things and places I do not know. But, we made plans to stay a week in Brighton, coming in early for the con to enjoy a couple days of London, involving a signing for [ profile] suricattus at Forbidden Planet. Where I found Tiny Barton.

I am rather infamous for bringing a mascot to the conference. All previous years it has been one of T's Monster Bags, which have taken bites of authors. But this year Barton applied superior infiltration skills and won pride of place.

Ye gods, where to start.
First, there was GISHWHES. It was glorious and fun and perfect and heartwarming and nerve-wracking and I cannot wait until next year.

And then there has been all the craziness inherent in getting copies of Fight Like a Girl out to backers (I am learning to hate formatting mailing labels. And that look everyone gives me when I trundle into the post with my arms laden with books). But, hey, I got to make a roadtrip to meet one of my backers!

Backer Roadtrip

And [ profile] corvus_animus has been in the process of moving into our attached apartment, so all manner of hectic there as I moved my office out of the bedroom there and into the living room on this half of the house.

My rescue received its 501(c)3 status and volunteered at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open (a huge event in this area). Dick's Sporting Goods helped get us started, financially, and we were happy to run ourselves ragged and loopy again this year.

It has been busy, but we are still managing to have a damn good time of it.

Well then.

So I have been out of commission the past few days do to my back (managed to tear at an old injury by...getting out of bed. Honestly. I wish I had a better story). While the meds are entertaining (at least for the people who have been on the receiving end of the texts. Sorry about that, [ profile] muffins_of_god ) I really want to get back in working order sometime soon.

Until then, have a group shot of the silly tea party I hosted right before my back decided to betray me in a fit of pique. Formal dress was required. We ended up with one yukata and a lovely suit coat as well as delightful dresses all around. I was pleased.

Capacious Photography, a set on Flickr.

A friend of a friend was visiting from way out of state, so we did what we do best- hosted with good food, good drink and then a show.

Turns out said friend of a friend is also a photographer, and was rather excited to photograph us playing with fire. We were more than happy to be photographed with the fancypants camera and skillful eye.

These are some of the best fireplay photos we have had done thus far. Enjoy!

As this is a rare post where the photos are NOT mine, all photos are taken by and belong to Capacious Photography Posted with permission. Do not repost or use without permission.

I have a bit of a crush on this man. It is partly a brain crush that comes from listening to him talk, sing, and reading his blog. Partly a purely physical reaction to that smile.

But when it comes down to it, it is the fact that he writes songs that fill me with such word-envy, and then proceeds to sing them with so much damn emotion. And it does not hurt that he is all around a rather damn swell fellow.

If you ever get a chance, go see Frank Turner perform live. Seriously. Amazing stuff. English punk rock country songs. Either way, go forth and at least listen to some amazing music. He has a few albums out, and they are magnificent.

[ profile] djkc and I trekked up to the Albany, NY area for a show last night (our third time seeing Frank) and ended up in a blissful stage-side location with rather wonderful ease. Spectacular show.

Those new to the program might be unaware of my love of couchsurfing. I have yet to avail myself of the use of someone else's couch, but I love hosting. Last night we had a young girl and her friend pop by and spend the night before attending Habitat for Humanity training (located about 2 miles from my home- they picked an excellent host to query!)

I will admit, rarely have I seen someone wholeheartedly take to EVERY animal in the house like that- scaled, furred, and feathered alike. The ferrets were quite the hit. Her compatriot, who stayed with another host and met us for breakfast, suggested I offer a complimentary ferret with every surfer. Binghamton not being much of a destination she thought that would increase the number of requests I get :D Fun and funny bunch of people, and totally welcome back any time.

After parting with my surfers (after a glorious diner breakfast) I ambled over to spend a spectacular morning and afternoon with [ profile] gravmyr sterilizing bottles and then bottling the milk wine that has been merrily brewing along in his basement since summer. We may have also visited the brew supply store so I could oooh and aaah at everything and [ profile] gravmyr could point out what supplies and kits I could use. Since this is how firespinning started, well, anyone like homebrew?

The less majestic end of the brewing process- doing all the dishes before bottling. Washing in hot soapy water, and then they sit in a sterilization bath for 20 minutes.

I appear to have ended up with the plague. Currently I am some sort of snot monster lacking in the basic senses of smell and hearing. With a fever. It has been going on for days and I have done nothing but sleep. The cats approve, if nothing else.

Well, sleep and watch Doctor Who with [ profile] djkc  when he gets home from work each evening. We decided he needed to watch the River Song episodes, and I got to ask whether he wanted to see them in River-Order or Doctor-Order. It was grand. And then I went back to sleep.

Prior to that I had a birthday.
Death- 0

Thank you all for the birthday wishes <3

A party was had [ profile] corvus_animus   brought her redtail hawk, Rusty.
I thoroughly enjoyed meeting him.
A long-standing duck war continued with an excellent birthday cake, into which  [ profile] djkc   mushed my face. Nothing says love like frosting well up the nasal passages.

And through it all, Mildmay was trying to sort out whether or not Rusty was something he could cuddle and play with.
(The answer, by the way, is no. There was no overt aggression, but Rusty was quick to assert he was big and fierce by spreading his wings way out as soon as he saw the cats)

I wanted to take a minute to be real damn grateful for all of you guys. I have been skulking about on here for years- through fandoms, disasters, ill health, and hilarity- and you have all been magnificent.

I don't need the tangible reminders. But sitting here and looking at the entrance to my bedroom, where I have taped all the cards you have mailed me over the past weeks, both new friends and old, and I really feel the need to point out I know some of the most amazing people on the planet.

Thanks, guys.

[ profile] artaddict obviously knows of my love of all things Ood. Santa!Ood is my superhero.

I think [ profile] scribblemoose captured most of my oldest and dearest fandoms right there. What a pleasure that was to open this afternoon!

Thank you both, and a HUGE thank you to everyone who has been filling my mailbox with cards. Now, pardon me whilst I go bask. I love getting mail. It really is the little things when it comes to me. At the end of the week I will take a picture of the bedroom wall I have been taping all of the cards to, so I can smile at them every morning <3

Every now and then I need to remind myself to just settle down. I like to be doing things, but I will continue to keep myself busy doing things past when I am enjoying the doing and I am mostly just doing them out of an inevitable and unavoidable bit of forward momentum.

So Saturday morning I sat down while djkc napped and worked on making some runes. It is one of the most relaxing activities I have come across, and something I genuinely enjoy doing. Before I knew it, two sets of antler and one set of birch runes were complete, and I had made a set of antler earrings with the Tiwaz rune on them. I have some oak and yew, and I think some ash, in reserve for next weekend.

Anyone need a set of runes? They do start to pile up...
